Creative Website Spotlight: Alex Buga

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On August - 18 - 2010

Alex Buga site

I like a good creative website just as much as the next techie, web nerd so I’ve decided I should post some of the cool sites I’ve come across and get back to posting some of the more cutting edge design floating around out there on the interwebs.

Sure, it’s not always made to be legit and pass every coding rule-book, but like many designers’ personal websites, experimental can be fun. I wanted to do something more experimental for my revamp, but time wouldn’t allow. Not yet anyhoo…

Check out Alex Buga’s site for fun in the meantime.
Complete with mini-drum machine if you feel the urge to bash out some angst.

Unhappy Hipsters – Rich People and Clinical Living

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On July - 31 - 2010

I remember liking this blog when it first started. And least it seems to be updated with much more regularity these days.

Sarcasm meets the modern world. A nice deconstruction.

So despite the term ‘hipster’ being used these days as a general reference to tight-jean wearing, educated, artsy, anaemic types, this blog is not about that kinda hipster.
It depicts house owners in their uber-modern abodes, generally ripped from the pages of Dwell magazine, somewhat recontextualised with witty comments.

All screenshots are examples from the Unappy Hipsters site. Click ‘em to see details and captions.

Creative Skateboard Tetris

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On February - 27 - 2010

I realise i’ve been rather busy of late – pre-occupied with getting better  and managing an ever growing To-Do-List (yes, i really do love my Lists  ). So these posts are more a general collection of “stuff” I stumble across on the interwebs.

Oh well…something’s better than nothing, right? Here’s a short clip with a bunch of downhill skaters, each with neon Tetris shapes on their heads. The aerial view is kinda cool in a cheap thrills kinda way. But i like the idea.

The iPad – iPad or iFail?

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On January - 28 - 2010

So Apple make the foray into the Tablet market with the release of the iPad. Looks more like a cross between an iPhone and a Kindle on steroids. Like seriously?

Also sounds like a Feminine Hygiene Product – I mean come on… Will it live up to the hype? The marketplace is so majorly full of laptops, netbooks, smartphones, homing pigeons with GPS capabilities…for fuck sake – when is it gonna end?

Apple's iPad. Bloody Hell...

Apple's iPad. Bloody Hell...

Isn’t the fact that we are all on call 24/7 and expected to be constantly “on” enough already? What happened to reading a good old paperback? I don’t care if it makes similar noises when you turn the digital page, it still is never quite the same…

A major drawback for me already is that the device does not support Flash. Now come on Apple… so many sites use even Flash Lite to operate sites and aspects of sites, non-flash enabled devices in this day and age are about 6 balls behind the 8-ball. For a company so innovative in some respects, one can be so backward in others (ahem*cough* the cameras on iPhones still lag behind any other device with a 5+MP capability). Happy 2010 – What The Hell Do We Call This Decade?

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On January - 3 - 2010

Well Happy New Year and all that jazz, but what the heck do we call the incoming decade?

I mean for the prior 10 years we labelled them the Noughties (or the Naughties as I think is more fitting). But we are at a standpoint where there is a whole nother bunch of years coming to the fore.

Happy New Year Kids!

Happy New Year Kids!

We could call them the Tens – but that is so lame. The Teens has been suggested, but I mean come on…we aren’t all teenage girls who like cutesy terms of endearment. Blech! The Tweens would only apply for the next few years – in which case one could not define an entire decade in the summary of a single term as we could with the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties and so forth…

I have thought about this and IMHO I believe that the best way to deal with this conundrum is to just label it The Pubic Years and be done with all the whining. If you got a better option, then by all means lemme know. But till then, deal with it. Running out of ideas here…!

So have yourselves a happy new year and may the Lords of Lightning spark it up with much prosperity for y’all. Here’s to more of what you DO want, and less of what you DON’T!

End of an Era…New Decade on the Horizon

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On December - 23 - 2009

If you’re anything like me, you probably be really glad to see the arse end 2009. To me personally, when one of those crazy up down years, where you get the good with the bad and lots of both. Thanks to unavoidable circumstances, all the things I set out to do in 2009 got pushed to the sidelines. Which means I personally have the pack to use into 2010.

So, I’ve had a mental advent calendar in my head for at least the past 3 months, just thinking of all the fantastic things I’m going to do in the next year  – or do i mean :-P

In aid of this dazzling new decade, I personally and officially declared next year to be:

2010 — the Year of Awesomeness! TM

Handy Firefox Plug-ins for Graphic & Web Designers

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On December - 18 - 2009

Understandably there are many people in the world do not use Firefox, but if you’re still stuck on Internet Explorer then good luck with that.  This post isn’t really aimed at you, so you may wish to ignore it.

Firefox Add-ons

Firefox Add-ons

If you haven’t already guessed I’m a big Firefox fan and tend to use it over other browsers. Personally I try and avoid Internet Explorer, and generally only use Safari if I’m on another Mac. Firefox addicts have created a ton of add-ons and plug-ins to make your life easier and enhance your browsing.

So whilst this is not an exhaustive list, by any measure, I thought I’d share some of the handy web design / general design tools and plug-ins that I’ve come across for– take your pick. On no particular order. I may add to this list later…

If there was a Dick Measuring Competition this week, “Biggest Dick” award goes to Kanye West!

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On September - 17 - 2009

“Imma let you finish…but first I’m gonna interrupt your moment and imma put in mah two cents $600 dollars worth”

“Kanye West: An Ego the Size of Russia?” was my original post title but i thought up a better one IMHO.

Truly. If there was a Dick Measuring Competition this week, Kanye West would have won it! For being the biggest dick. Perhaps we should rename him RumpleForeskin?

Kanye West - not that you wouldn't have trouble recognising him after this weeks event...

Kanye West - not that you wouldn't have trouble recognising him after this weeks event...

By now if you haven’t seen train wreck that was Kanye West at the MTV VMA’s earlier this week, then you really have been living under a rock. Not that that is a bad thing.

However, long story short, Kanye – in some moment of blank headspace, impulsively decided to crash Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video.

Hey I’m not exactly a Taylor Swift fan either, but who is tool enough to gatecrash and on-air awards speech FFS?! Oh yeah, Kanye. If you missed it get the goss here and here.

.

I mean it’s not every day the President of the United States of America calls you “a jackass”… At least everyone knows who he is. Talk about one way to commit social suicide    Check out the footage…

Need to Unwind? Get Creamy & Dreamy with a Milk Bath!

Posted by The Design Assassin (Admin) On July - 12 - 2009

Stressed by life? Love to relax some? Body in dire need of some time out?

Luxe on a Beer Budget

Luxe on a Beer Budget

You sound like you need to take some time out for yourself and R-E-L-A-X. Everyone benefits from spending some time shutting out the world and focusing on their own self. So what? Be selfish for a while! You deserve to have some “ME” time. It’s only healthy.

A simple, but often forgotten luxury is a bath. For those of you who don’t have one then you’ve lucked out – unless you can hire a hotel or borrow a friends.

My relaxation suggestion for the day is to do something different and try a milk bath. Cleopatra is remembered for bathing in milk, and that was why she was so renown for her wonderful, youthful skin. For the majority of you that have never had the pleasure, a milk bath is just sooo relaxing – something decadent that can be done on the cheap.

Milk baths benefit the skin immensely. Milk is a natural exfoliater. It nourishes and moisturises the skin. The active property that makes a milk bath feel so delightful is the fact that milk contains lactic acid – the source of alpha hydroxy acids. Read the rest of this entry »
